The Vickers hardness of 95 zirconia beads is greater than 1250 and the density is greater than 6.0 g/cm ³. Strong impact and shear forces are generated during the grinding process. A case study of a paper mill showed that using 3-4mm zirconia beads shortened the grinding time of kaolin from 8 hours to 5 hours (a reduction of 37.5%) and reduced energy consumption by 15%. This efficiency stems from the ability of beads to break down kaolin aggregates (diameter>50 μ m) into submicron particles in fewer cycles. A self wear rate of less than 1 PPM can minimize the contamination of weld bead fragments.
